Announcement of the death of Pope Francis

Old Roman Apostolate
April 21, A.D. 2025 — Easter Monday

It is with due reverence and gravity that we announce the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who departed this life on the morning of Easter Monday, the 21st of April, in the Year of Our Lord 2025, in his 89th year.

Having served as Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church since his election on 13 March 2013, Pope Francis was the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to ascend the Chair of Peter. His papacy was marked by immense visibility, unprecedented pastoral initiatives, and a tireless engagement with global issues of poverty, migration, and environmental degradation.

Now that he has passed from this world, we commend his soul to the mercy of Almighty God, who alone judges justly. However one may assess the legacy of his pontificate, the Church’s perennial duty remains unchanged: to offer suffrages for the dead and to implore Divine Mercy for all those who have borne the burdens of high ecclesiastical office.

As members of the Old Roman Apostolate, holding fast to the unbroken Tradition of the Church, we urge all our clergy and faithful to remember the soul of Jorge Mario Bergoglio in their private prayers and devotions, and especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass – once the Paschal Octave has been completed, in accordance with the liturgical norms and the Church’s time-honoured wisdom.

May our Lord Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and triumphant over sin, receive him with mercy and grant him rest and light eternal.

Oremus

Amen.

O God, who in your wondrous providence chose your servant Pope Francis to preside over your Church, grant, we pray, that, having served as the Vicar of your Son on earth, he may be welcomed by Him into eternal glory. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat ei.
Requiescat in pace. Amen.
