The crisis of our age is increasingly a crisis of custody. Churches, institutions and nations inherit things they did not create, yet too often behave as though inheritance conferred ownership rather than obligation. The Catholic answer is older and sterner: what is received must be guarded, and what is guarded must be handed on.
