Today's Homily: St Paulinus of York; perseverance
St. Paulinus of York, who was instrumental in spreading Christianity to Northern England in the 7th century. Born in Rome, Paulinus joined the Gregorian mission to England, arriving as part of the second wave after St. Augustine. He played a key role in evangelizing Northumbria, overcoming challenges in a predominantly pagan region. Known for his humility and perseverance, he walked from village to village, embodying the Gospel through his actions as much as his words. Paulinus baptized King Edwin after a series of encounters that included interpreting a prophetic dream. Following Edwin’s conversion, many in his kingdom were baptized, marking a significant milestone in establishing Christianity in the region. Paulinus later became the first Bishop of York and eventually, Bishop of Rochester, where he continued his missionary work until his death. He is remembered for his resilience and compassionate approach to spreading the faith, serving as a lasting inspiration for perseverance and humble evangelization.
